Looking for like-minded
opera enthusiasts in the Sudbury area?
The Sudbury Opera Guild promotes the appreciation of opera by holding meetings for interested people, presenting opera programs at meetings—and, in conjunction with other institutions, funding appropriate scholarships, organizing trips to opera performances, and organizing live concerts where appropriate.
We hold regular monthly meetings at Cambrian College in Sudbury on the first Sunday each month from September to June. The meetings comprise a one-hour presentation on an opera or opera theme followed by a short business meeting.
The Guild maintains a significant library of CDs, DVDs and VHS tapes of operatic material which is available for presentations and/or borrowing by members. We have a suitable audio-visual setup to facilitate the presentations and this equipment is also available for use by the Cambrian College music department.
The Guild currently organizes one trip to the COC in February each year. Music students (vocal) are welcomed on this trip and the Guild subsidizes their travel costs. The Guild also presents various scholarships each year to Cambrian College including a memorial scholarship in George Whalen's memory. We also support the Sudbury Kiwanis Music Festival with the top vocal scholarship each year.
Our cooperation with the COC has been demonstrated previously with annual contributions to the capital fund for the new opera house. we promote the COC performances on an ongoing basis. With the advent of the Metropolitan Opera in HD series, members have ready access to these performances at the local cinema as well.
