For all positions, volunteers are requested to be available for some (rather than all) of the hours and days within the timeframes specified below unless otherwise indicated.
Office volunteers assist with administrative projects including preparation of mailings, courtesy calling, filing, data entry and a variety of other related duties. Required Skills: Organization, customer service, computer skills, research, writing, filing. Shifts: Weekdays, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Archive volunteers assist in a variety of duties including the cataloguing, organization and preservation of COC materials. Required skills: Organization, attention to detail. Shifts: Mondays and Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Free Concert Series volunteers: The Free Concert Series takes place every Tuesday and Thursday at noon, and on the first Wednesday evening of each month at the Four Seasons Centre. Volunteers direct patrons to seats during arrival and egress, and provide general customer service. Required skills: Customer service, standing for long periods of time. Shifts: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; Wednesdays, 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Friends Lounge volunteers check members' cards for entry, provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere for opera-goers. Required Skills: Customer service, knowledge and familiarity with opera, standing for long periods of time. Shifts: Evenings, weekend afternoons and evenings
Opera Shop volunteers: The Opera Shop is the resident gift shop at the Four Seasons Centre. The Opera Shop is open before, during and (sometimes) after performances only. Volunteers assist in a variety of tasks including customer service, cashier, and re-stocking, displaying and pricing merchandise. Required Skills: Customer Service, processing orders, using credit card/debit machines, organization, attention to detail, standing for long periods of time. Shifts: Evenings, weekend afternoons, occasional weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Education Programs volunteers work with the education and outreach team to help facilitate a wide variety of programs for school groups, children, youth and adults. A valid Vulnerable Sector Verification is required for any individual engaging with "vulnerable persons" (young people, seniors and individuals with exceptionalities). Volunteers may engage directly with audiences and young participants or may focus on more administrative tasks such as data entry, sending emails, preparing program packages and information, etc. Required Skills: Communication, writing, working with children, youth and/or adults, problem solving, computer skills. Shifts: Weekdays between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.; occasional weekends.
Four Seasons Centre Tour Guides lead school groups and members of the public on weekday, weekend and private tours of the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. Guides engage with the public and initiate conversations about opera. Volunteers must have a valid Vulnerable Sector Verification to lead tours. Required Skills: Customer Service, standing and/or walking for long periods of time, knowledge of opera, communication, memorizing a script. Shifts: Sundays, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; Tuesdays, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.; and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Joey and Toby Tanenbaum Opera Centre Tour Guides lead school groups and members of the public on tours of the administrative and creative spaces of the COC including the music library; COC archives; wigs, costume and props departments; and rehearsal spaces. Guides must be comfortable and/or have previous experience working with large groups of people, including school-aged children. Volunteers must have a valid Vulnerable Sector Verification to lead tours. Required Skills: Customer service, standing and/or walking for long periods of time (including stairs), knowledge of opera, communication, memorizing a script. Shifts: Weekdays, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
