TEN SINGERS FROM ACROSS CANADA COMPETE FOR CASH PRIZES AND PLACES IN COC'S ENSEMBLE STUDIO

Toronto Out of a pool of 146 young, aspiring opera singers from across the country, the Canadian Opera Company has selected 10 to compete in the Second Annual COC Ensemble Studio Competition on November 29, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.  The young singers competing are: bass-baritone Gordon Bintner (Regina, Sask.); mezzo-soprano Charlotte Burrage (Woodstock, Ont.); soprano Aviva Fortunata (Calgary, Alta.); baritone Clarence Frazer (Toronto, Ont.); tenor Andrew Haji (London, Ont.); mezzo-soprano Danielle MacMillan (Toronto, Ont.); bass Nathan Keoughan (Charlottetown, P.E.I.); tenor Michael Marino (London, Ont.); soprano Lara Secord-Haid (Winnipeg, Man.) and soprano Kelsey Vicary (Niagara Falls, Ont.).

COC 2011/2012 SEASON ACHIEVES 91% ATTENDANCE AND FOURTH HIGHEST SINGLE TICKET SALES IN HISTORY

Toronto Today at the Canadian Opera Company’s Annual General Meeting, COC Board President Philip C. Deck announced that in 2011/2012 the company achieved an average attendance of 91%, and its fourth highest single ticket sales in its history.  The COC also overcame an operating deficit by accessing its special cash reserves to post a modest surplus of $10,000.

In 2011/2012, the Canadian Opera Company continued to raise the bar for opera in Toronto with artistic triumphs such as our new productions of Rigoletto, Love from Afar and the double-bill of A Florentine Tragedy and Gianni Schicchi, and new heights in performance quality on the way to posting an impressive 91% attendance capacity,” said COC Board President Philip C. Deck.

COC MUSIC DIRECTOR JOHANNES DEBUS RENEWS CONTRACT THROUGH TO 2016/2017

Toronto Canadian Opera Company General Director Alexander Neef is pleased to announce that Music Director Johannes Debus has signed a new contract with the COC that extends his tenure as Music Director through the 2016/2017 season.  Debus joined the COC at the start of the 2009/2010 season with a contract that would have him with the company through 2012/2013.

“I am extremely pleased that Johannes has agreed to an extension of his contract as Music Director.  He brings such energy, talent and leadership to our company,” says COC General Director Alexander Neef.  “His musicianship is faultless.  There is no limit to the possibilities he can help us explore and the artistic heights we can reach within the environment that he has created with the orchestra and chorus.  We are lucky to have him and even luckier that he has decided to stay on for several more years.”
