Toronto – The Canadian Opera Company’s 2014/2015 winter season opens with a game-changing new production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Internationally acclaimed Russian director Dmitri Tcherniakov defies convention with this dark and witty masterpiece inspired by literature’s most famous womanizer, Don Juan. His vision is brought to blistering life by a dream cast led by renowned Canadian baritone Russell Braun and German maestro Michael Hofstetter conducting Mozart’s glorious score of irresistible melodies. Sung in Italian with English SURTITLESTM, Don Giovanni runs for 10 performances on January 24, 27, 30, February 1, 3, 6, 12, 14, 18, 21, 2015 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.

TORONTO’S CHARLES SY WINS TOP PRIZE AND AUDIENCE CHOICE AWARD AT CANADIAN OPERA COMPANY’S ANNUAL VOCAL COMPETITION

COC’s Fundraising Gala, Centre Stage, Features Canada’s Biggest Opera Stars: Host Ben Heppner and Surprise Performance by Soprano Adrianne Pieczonka

Toronto – Tenor Charles Sy of Toronto took home first prize and the Audience Choice Award at the Canadian Opera Company’s Ensemble Studio Competition on November 25, 2014, at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. The competition is the feature event of the COC’s annual fundraising gala, Centre Stage, an evening dedicated to the discovery and celebration of the next generation of opera stars. Sy was selected from seven finalists to receive the $5,000 award. Baritone Dimitri Katotakis of Toronto, won the second prize of $3,000, and tenor Aaron Sheppard of St. John’s, N.L.., was awarded the third prize of $1,500. In addition, Sy was selected by the audience as the winner of the Audience Choice Award, worth $1,500.

SEVEN CANADIAN SINGERS TAKE CENTRE STAGE IN COC VOCAL SHOWCASE COMPETITION

Toronto – Out of a pool of 175 aspiring opera singers from across the country, the Canadian Opera Company has selected seven to compete at Centre Stage: Ensemble Studio Competition Gala on November 25, 2014 at Toronto’s Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. This year hosted by world renowned Canadian tenor Ben Heppner, Centre Stage is the COC’s annual fundraising gala dedicated to the discovery and celebration of the next generation of opera stars. The Ensemble Studio Competition is the gala’s feature event and an exhilarating vocal showcase with the singers, selected from nationwide auditions for the COC Ensemble Studio – Canada’s premier training program for young opera professionals – vying for cash prizes ranging in value from $1,500 to $5,000.
