The COC Introduces Children to the World of Opera with the XStrata Ensemble Studio School Tour

Toronto, Ontario � The Canadian Opera Company's Xstrata Ensemble Studio School Tour returns to elementary schools across Ontario from November 9 to December 6, 2009 with The Barber of Seville by Gioacchino Rossini and Cinderella, a combination of Jules Massenet's and Rossini's magical scores.� The annual tour reaches over 16,000 students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 and displays the talents of professional singers from the renowned COC Ensemble Studio training program, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary during the 2009/10 season.� The tour has brought opera to local schools and communities across Ontario for over 20 years and features a 45-minute performance sung in English, which is adapted for a younger audience and concludes with a post-show question-and-answer period with members from the cast and crew.� A complete tour schedule is available upon request.

COC'S Popular Fun, Interactive Opera 101 Returns for Another Season

Toronto, Ontario � The Canadian Opera Company's FREE Opera 101 series launches its eighth season on October 2, 2009 at 7:30 p.m., with special guest, Robert Lepage, director of this season's world premiere production of The Nightingale and Other Short Fables.� The first instalment of Opera 101 is held in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.� Robert Lepage is joined by Canadian bass, Robert Pomakov and members of the creative team in this exciting event.�

Hosted by CBC Radio personality Brent Bambury, Opera 101 is a friendly and informal event where neophytes learn about opera. Taking place three times over the course of the 2009/10 season, Opera 101 is designed to demystify opera by illuminating and illustrating different aspects of the art form.� The series treats adults to a discussion between a special guest and an exciting host, followed by a question-and-answer period.� Previous guests include author Margaret Atwood, internationally-acclaimed soprano Adrianne Pieczonka, bass-baritone Pavlo Hunka, award winning set and costume designer Dany Lyne and directors Tim Albery and John Caird.�
