Otello Critical Acclaim

The reviews are in for Otello!

John Terauds, Toronto Star

Giuseppe Verdi's last and greatest tragic opera deserves a solid production. Fortunately, that is exactly what the Canadian Opera Company unveiled at the Wednesday night premiere of Otello.

Forbis knows how to deliver drama

Scott Hendricks, is the ideal Iago

Dusky-voiced Italian soprano Tiziana Caruso has that rare mix of sweetness and steel in her delivery that created a strong counterpoint to her madly jealous husband.

Italian conductor Paolo Olmi led a tightly coiled, deep-hued reading of Verdi's score while director Paul Curran kept in mirror step with the music

The beautifully detailed period costumes and sophisticated lighting also serve the story well, helping to create an operatic whole that is even larger than its generous parts.

Clara Venice to Rock the Ball at the stroke of midnight at the Canadian Opera Company's Cinderella-themed Operanation VII

Toronto, OntarioOnce upon a time, the fairy tale ended at midnight.  Times have changed.  When the clock strikes 12 a.m. on Friday, October 29, 2010 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts for Operanation VII, Cinderella: Rock the Ball, the multi-talented, Canadian star Clara Venice, is set to take the stage.

Following a 10:30 p.m. mash-up performance by Canadian indie rock darlings, Broken Social Scene with members of the Canadian Opera Company (COC) Ensemble Studio, Venice a triple threat as therminist, vocalist and electric violinist will keep the crowd's adrenaline pumping with her sultry, edgy style of electro-pop-meets-cabaret show.

I love fusing music styles and Operanation, in particular with this year's Cinderella: Rock the Ball theme, is the perfect opportunity to do so, said Venice. I've created something extra-special and never-yet-performed, so expect a few surprises.
