The COC's 2009/10 Diamond Anniversary Season Opens with Audience Favourite Madama Butterfly

Toronto, Ontario � The Canadian Opera Company opens its 2009/10 Diamond Anniversary season with a revival of Puccini's cherished masterpiece Madama Butterfly.� Canadian theatrical legend Brian Macdonald returns to the COC to remount this beloved production, and Italian maestro�Carlo Montanaro makes his company debut leading the COC Orchestra and Chorus, sharing the podium with COC resident conductor Derek Bate.� With 15 performances to accommodate its enormous popularity, Madama Butterfly runs September 26, 29, 30, October 8, 10, 14, 16, 18, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 31, and November 3, 2009 and is sung in Italian with English SURTITLES�.

COC Presents Spectacular World Premiere by Visionary Director Robert Lepage

Toronto, Ontario � Continuing the COC's fall 2009/10 Diamond Anniversary season is the world premiere of a new opera creation by Canadian director Robert Lepage.� Entitled The Nightingale and Other Short Fables, this production is a program of two short operas and other vocal and instrumental pieces by composer Igor Stravinsky.� For The Nightingale and Other Short Fables, Robert Lepage draws on ancient and contemporary storytelling techniques incorporating singers, acrobats, and the charm and mystery of shadow play and Asian puppetry.� This visually arresting program is designed to delight audience members of all ages.� The Nightingale and Other Short Fables is a COC world-premiere in co-production with the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence and Opéra national de Lyon, in collaboration with Mr. Lepage's production company Ex Machina.� This is the only North American engagement, and runs October 17, 20, 22, 24, 30, and November 1, 4, 5, 2009 and is sung in Russian with English SURTITLES�.
