La Bohme Reviews

The reviews are in:

"Puccini's 1896 La Bohème is an oddball opera that combines realism with romanticism in a score so lean that it doesn't require arty or academic commentary. Director Maer Gronsdal Powell and set designer Wolfram Skalicki offer a naturalist setting wherein this tragedy unfolds effortlessly. The resulting three hours pass quickly, propelled by performances that encapsulate the story's merriment and the gravitas of Paris's Latin Quarter during a 19th-century winter."

Simon Boccanegra Reviews Are In!

The critics have spoken!

"The greatest Verdi opera we almost never hear opened on Saturday night in a production worthy of it. . . . What a joy, and what a relief, that it has returned at last, well sung, well played, and in a 2008 Covent Garden production gorgeously designed by John Gunter, adroitly remounted here by Ian Judgethat production's original directorand atmospherically lighted by Nigel Levings." (Ken Winters, Globe and Mail)

"In the title role, baritone Paolo Gavanelli makes a stunning COC debut, flawlessly capturing both the menace and the passion of a man who claws his way to the top of Genoa's political heap only to find himself looking back on nothing but ruin, drawing maximum emotion from Verdi's score.

"Meanwhile, as his daughter Maria, raised as Amelia Grimaldai, soprano Tamara Wilson gives a performance that is both utterly grounded and soaring." (John Coulbourn, Toronto Sun)

"Simon Boccanegra packs a melodramatic wallop with a combination of political intrigue, paternal devotion and fearless love.

"The COC Orchestra was impeccably led by Italian Marco Guidarini, who carefully highlighted the many musical cues in this, a score that is much deeper than what we think of as the Verdi norm.

"Simon Boccanegra hasn't been seen in Toronto for 30 years. A great production, like this one, makes one want to experience it more often." (John Terauds, Toronto Star)
