Sketches and Video from The Magic Flute

The Canadian Opera Company’s 61st season continues this winter with a new COC production of Mozart’s mystical and beloved fairytale, The Magic Flute. COC Music Director Johannes Debus conducts this timeless masterpiece and Tony Award®-nominated director Diane Paulus makes her COC debut with this playful production for all ages. The Magic Flute also features Canadian opera stars Michael Schade and Isabel Bayrakdarian, singing together at the COC for the first time, in the roles of Mozart’s star-crossed lovers Tamino and Pamina. The Magic Flute is sung in German with English SURTITLES™, and runs for 12 performances on Jan. 29, Feb. 1, 3, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 18, 20, 23, and 25, 2011.

Regular single tickets to The Magic Flute range from $62 to $281, plus applicable taxes, and standing room and rush tickets for as little as $12 can be purchased the day of the performance. Tickets can be purchased online, over the phone at 416-363-8231 (long distance in Canada and the U.S. 1-800-250-4653), or at the Four Seasons Centre box office. Tickets for young people under 15, when seated next to an accompanying adult, are 50% off.

There will be a special performance of The Magic Flute on Feb. 17 featuring the exciting young singers of the COC’s Ensemble Studio performing the principal roles with Johannes Debus and the COC orchestra.

Follow Parlando, the COC blog, to see continuing updates and photos from behind the scenes as we build this new production.

We've assembled a superb cast and creative team:

  • Director Diane Paulus was nominated for a Tony Award® in the Best Director category for her work on the 2009 Broadway revival of Hair.
  • Michael Schade, who will sing Tamino in eight performances, is one of today's leading Mozart tenors. He last sang with the COC in 2009's Rusalka.
  • Isabel Bayrakdarian, who will sing Pamina in eight performances, is an Ensemble Studio graduate who last performed with the COC in this year's Idomeneo. The New York Times praised her "superb portrayal" of Pamina at the Metropolitan Opera in 2006.
  • Russian baritone Rodion Pogossov will sing Papageno, a role he has also played at the Metropolitan Opera.
  • Simone Osborne, who will sing Pamina in the final four performances, is a current Ensemble Studio member and winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
