After School Opera Program

Sing. Laugh. Create.

What do magic, bees, the internet, food fights, the Olympics and outer space have in common? They have all been the inspiration for dramatic and comedic operas made by and for children in the After School Opera Program. Children become opera stars and are invited to explore and learn about the basics of opera through singing, libretto writing, acting and design. Working with COC artist-educators, children meet once a week after school for 10 consecutive weeks, premiering a mini-opera at the end of term in a performance for friends and family.

Ages: 7 to 12 (by the first day of the program)
Tuition: $11 to 15 per term
Time: 4 – 6 p.m.
Location:
Multiple locations across the Greater Toronto Area

Please check back in September for 2012/2013 dates, locations and registration information.

This term's theme: War of 1812

Participants of the program will be exploring the War of 1812 through opera.

With the help of program leader Dean Burry, participants will write, rehearse and star in an opera about the events that took place in York (now Toronto) nearly 200 years ago! Participants will learn what it was like to live in York at the beginning of the 19th century through exploratory and interactive lessons led by experts from Ontario Heritage Trust, our spring program partners.

Learn more about the War of 1812 and our Ontario history by visiting the insightful and family-friendly exhibition Foundations and Fire: Early Parliament and the War of 1812 Experience at York on view now at the new Ontario Heritage Trust Parliament interpretive centre, located at 265 Front St. E. Just next door to our Joey and Toby Tanenbaum Opera Centre location!

The After School Opera Program is generously supported by The McLean Foundation, the Canadian Opera Company and anonymous private donors. Established program centres include: St. Christopher House Music School, Boys and Girls Club of East Scarborough, Barbara Frum Recreation Centre, Ourland Community Centre.
