Aida Rehearsals Start Today!

Rehearsals officially start today for Aida, and everyone is buzzing with activity.

Jon Morrell, the costume designer, is hard at work in the costume area, overseeing costume and wig fittings. The Imperial Oil Opera Theatre is filling up with furniture, clothing racks, and props both massive and delicate. Tim Albery will soon introduce to us his overall concept for the new production—which, for the time being, we will keep under wraps. The Ensemble Studio (our young artists training program) has also assembled, and is beginning its work for the season.

Where In Venice is Death In Venice?

Death in Venice is set, of course, in Venice, and the title alone is enough to conjure up lots of imagery: The Piazza San Marco teeming with pigeons; ornate, arching facades; lavish restaurants and casinos; murky and mysterious canals. Yoshi Oida's production doesn't attempt to recreate La Serenissima in a realistic way, however. A pool of water, a brick wall, wooden boards, and video projections will be used to suggest, rather than reconstruct, the famous scenery. Even so, the locations of Venice are a haunting presence in this story.

Five Reasons to Look Forward to Seeing Ben Heppner

Ben Heppner will be singing a recital on the afternoon of Sept. 11 at the Four Seasons Centre, accompanied by John Hess. Here are five reasons why you should be excited to see it:

1. Ben Heppner is one of the world's most famous tenors.

He's been highly acclaimed both in mountain-peak roles like Tristan and in more intimate repertoire like the parlour songs of Tosti. He's a regular at all the most prestigious opera houses, and much-beloved by audiences all over the world. For connoisseurs of classical singing, a Ben Heppner recital is a treat.
