  • Philippe Sly, currently studying at the Merola Opera Program in San Francisco, will be joining the Ensemble Studio this fall. In this article in the San Francisco Chronicle, Philippe and others talk about the challenges faced by young singers with "in between" ranges when trying to pin down the true nature of their instruments.

Daily Links, July 19

  • Amber Wagner, who made a thrilling surprise debut as Ariadne with us this spring in Ariadne auf Naxos, will be taking up the role again this November with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, replacing Deborah Voigt. Read more at Operagasm.

  • Since 2008, we've worked closely with the digital strategists at Delvinia to shape and enhance the way we interact with our patrons online. Delvinia President Steve Mast will be using his work with us as a case study in an presentation titled "Shifting Donor Behaviour Online" at the upcoming Artez InterAction conference. You can preview part of his talk on Delvinia's blog.

Daily Links, July 18

  • A new session of Summer Opera Camp begins today! This session, for children aged 10 to 12, is titled DIY world. As the name suggests, the participants will be hard at work before their showcase performance on Friday! The operas Iphigenia in Tauris and Semele will serve as inspiration for their activities.

  • Judith Yan, the exciting new conductor of the Guelph Symphony Orchestra, spent three years as the COC's conductor-in-residence and tells about her fond memories of Richard Bradshaw: “Richard taught me what was most important about music . . . It’s about making connections and building bridges. He shoved me out there all the time and I’m a better person for it.” Since working with the COC orchestra, she's conducted opera and ballet all over the world. 

  • Diamond and Schmitt Architects, the firm behind the design of the Four Seasons Centre, has been chosen by the Canadian Stage Company to investigate options for improving their performance space, reports the Toronto Star.
