It’s only day three of week one of our Summer Youth Intensive, and already we have been hearing some true talent from our all-female group. This morning, the girls rehearsed in the spacious Imperial Oil Opera Theatre, where many of the COC’s productions come to fruition during the season.
Through excerpts from Verdi’s Nabucco, Bizet’s Carmen, and Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the SYI group worked on their vocal technique and diction in an ensemble rehearsal led by Kyra Millan.
Accompanist Kevin Tam provided the soundtrack for the rehearsal. Here he is during a short break:
Later, the participants worked with director Graham Cozzubbo to stage sections of Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Graham’s minimalist staging is inspired by a French production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni by Peter Brook, where the only props used were simple benches and poles.
Graham worked one-on-one with SYI participant Bridget, whose role as lead fairy involves ushering in the chorus of fairies with a grand gesture. The result was fantastic!
