Tenor Ramón Vargas has built a fantastic reputation during his 30-year career. He's impressed audiences worldwide at the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala and the Vienna State Opera, just to mention a few, and has become one of the most sought after tenors in the world. He draws impressive audiences wherever he goes, and his role debut of Manrico at the COC promises to be no different. To celebrate his talent, here are five videos featuring Vargas at his best, from tormented to tender; tragic to beautiful.
Di quella pira – Only one of the most famous pieces found in Il Trovatore! Listen to Vargas's recording of this famous tenor aria for his album, Verdi Arias before you hear him sing it live at the Four Seasons Centre. Listen to the video below of Vargas singing the aria with soprano Annegher Stumphius.
St. Sulpice Scene – Renée Fleming and Ramón Vargas perform this tender scene from Massenet's Manon. In his performance as Le Chevalier des Grieux, Vargas is able to articulate the complex emotions of his character, resulting in a triumphant duet with Fleming. Performed at the Met Opening Night Gala in 2008.
La danza – Vargas makes this Rossini piece look almost easy as his voice joyfully dances along with the orchestra in this 2007 Opera Gala performance at the Festival Theatre in Baden-Baden.
Che gelida manina – Ramón Vargas and Angela Gheorghiu circle each other as the lovers Mimi and Rodolfo in this video from the Metropolitan Opera in 2008. Notice how Vargas's Rodolfo transitions from mere flirting with Mimi, to complete infatuation as he falls under her spell.
Kuda, kuda vy udalilis – Also known as "Lensky's aria," Vargas performs as the bewildered and hurt Lensky in Eugene Onegin, a man who is confused by a malicious joke played on him by his best friend Onegin. Vargas plays the tortured poet with such fierce devotion and pride that it's hard not to have your heart break alongside his.
