Tracy Dahl and Thomas Allen

If you enjoyed the mainstage production of the Canadian Opera Company's Così fan tutte, or want to catch a sneak preview of the extraordinary talent on display, February is the month to head on down to the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre. Hear three renowned artists from the mainstage cast of Così fan tutte in an intimate concert setting and all for free!

Tracy Dahl

Tuesday, February 4, 2014 - 12 p.m. - Tracy Dahl - Songs from the Heart
Acclaimed Canadian coloratura soprano Tracy Dahl kicks off a Così-packed month with pianist Liz Upchurch. Acclaimed for her remarkable agility, clarity and a sound “filled with sunshine, rainbows and laser light” (Opera magazine), Tracy is our Despina in Così. She performs a selection of songs by Purcell, Debussy, R. Strauss, Greer and Hoiby. Hear her perform in the recording below.

Paul Appleby

Tuesday, February 11, 2014 - 12 p.m. - Paul Appleby - The Art of Song
A recent graduate of the Metropolitan Opera's Lindemann Young Artist Program and one of the most inspiring new voices of his generation, tenor Paul Appleby (Ferrando in Così fan tutte) performs a selection of German and American art songs by Schubert, Schumann, John Harbison and John Musto. In the video below, he takes on "Il mio tesoro" from Don Giovanni.

Sir Thomas Allen

Thursday, February 13, 2014 - 12 p.m. - Sir Thomas Allen - Songs of the Sea
Internationally acclaimed English baritone Sir Thomas Allen, Così's wily Don Alfonso, takes us on a musical journey to the seaside. He teams up with pianist Rachel Andrist in a bittersweet program of folk songs, art songs and arias, including works by Haydn, Schubert and Britten. Catch a preview with his recording of Haydn's "Sailor's Song."

But that's not all! Check out the array of dance, jazz and chamber music performances this month as well. You can learn about the rest of our free concerts in February here.

Let us know which performances you're looking forward to in the comments or on our Facebook page.

Inside Opera: Rehearsing A Masked Ball with Conductor Stephen Lord

Rehearsing A Masked Ball with conductor Stephen Lord

This winter, conductor Stephen Lord returns to the COC to conduct Verdi's A Masked Ball. The veteran conductor (one of only four conductors recently named by Opera News as being among the 25 most powerful names in U.S. opera!) recently led the COC Orchestra with our 2013 production of Lucia di Lammermoor, and prior to that, our 1998 Norma.

Our latest Inside Opera video for Verdi's A Masked Ball features a day in the life of conductor Stephen Lord. Does a maestro have an office? What happens when he steps into the rehearsal hall? What is an orchestral reading? All these questions and more are answered in the video below!

A Masked Ball runs from February 2 to 22 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. For more information and to purchase tickets, click here.
