For the last few days, four singers from the Atelier lyrique – the Opéra de Montréal's young artists training program – have joined us here at the COC in Toronto. As part of an annual exchange program with Atelier lyrique, some of our Ensemble Studio artists will participate in a similar work session in Montreal later this month.
This week these young Atelier artists participated in intensive vocal and dramatic coachings, diction, singing lessons and personal training. They came to performances of Tosca and Love From Afar. And their exchange experience culminates tomorrow, February 7, with a noon-hour concert as part of the Free Concert Series in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre. This is a joint concert together with the COC Ensemble Studio singers and is entitled, rather appropriately, Collaborations. It features arias from Il barbiere di Siviglia, La clemenza di Tito, Don Giovanni, and Der Rosenkavalier.
World-renowned singers such as Ben Heppner, Isabel Bayrakdarian, John Fanning and Wendy Nielsen were once young singers getting some of their first performance experiences with the COC's Ensemble Studio program. The young artists performing in the free concert tomorrow are on the cusp of their own major careers. It's a concert not to be missed.
