The Big COC Podcast - Episode Nine - Definitely not Moribund

For Episode 9, the “Definitely Not Moribund” edition, we welcome back opera blogger and journalist John Gilks, as well as opera journalist Joseph So. Joining us for the first time is arts journalist Paula Citron. Gianmarco Segato, the COC’s Adult Programs Manager, is your host.

A recent article in the Globe and Mail about the phenomenon known as the “Compulsory Canadian Standing O” spurs on a lively chat (at 1:50). We also examine audience reactions to women singing male roles (a.k.a. “pants roles”) in the COC’s recent La clemenza di Tito (at 14:40).

We finish with our monthly list of favourite livestreams; short, comic, contemporary opera clips, and newly-released DVDs (at 29:30).

The Big COC Podcast - Episode Eight - State of the Nations

For Episode 8, “State of the Nations”, we welcome back Opera Canada magazine’s editor, Wayne Gooding; opera blogger and journalist John Gilks as well as Claire Morley, the COC’s Communications Assistant. Gianmarco Segato, the COC’s Adult Programs Manager, is your host.

Our panel looks at the COC’s recently announced 2013-2014 season, and opinions are fired up by Sir Peter Jonas’s recent survey of the current German opera scene in the January issue of Opera. Spurred on by a recent conversation on operaramblings, we tackle the often polarizing views of opera sung in translation and then lighten things up with our favourite seat-jumping tales, inspired by an interesting Twitter conversation.

To end the podcast, we offer up our monthly list of favourite historic recordings, DVDs, and YouTube clips.

The Big COC Podcast – Episode Seven

For Episode 7, “Turandot on Ice!”, we welcome back author and blogger Lydia Perovic, Opera Canada magazine’s editor, Wayne Gooding as well as opera journalist Joseph So. Gianmarco Segato, the COC’s Adult Programs Manager is your host.

We begin with the controversy surrounding La Scala's decision to open their season with Wagner instead of Verdi; we dissect the recent COC Ensemble Competition; we debate the merits of Giacomo Meyerbeer (“sublime!”… “totally forgettable!”) in light of the Royal Opera’s new Robert le Diable and, try not to get too flustered as we examine how opera companies are sexing up their seasons. We end the chat with a new feature: our summary of our favourite new recordings, live-stream productions and YouTube clips for the month!

This is the last Big COC Podcast for 2012. We’re taking a little break for the holidays and will be back in January. We wish you all the best of the season and a happy New Year!
