Opera Creation Program

Transform the entire community into an opera company! The COC takes residency in your school, working with teachers to determine responsibilities for each class – roles to choose from include composers/librettists, production department (directors, designers, props shop), performers (singers, dancers, actors), the communications department (listings, newspaper reviews, ads, performance programs), and the development department (fundraising), etc.

Duration: Six-month creation project
Grades: 4 to 8, 9 to 12
Applications: There are plans for this program to be piloted at a local Toronto school; stay tuned for details about its public launch.

Participating Schools receive:

  • Significant financial assistance towards the cost of the Opera Creation Program (to a maximum of 75% of the total fees)
  • Dedicated project support from one of the education team members
  • Visits by mentor artists over the course of a six-month creation and rehearsal process (artists may include: composer, librettist, conductor, director, designer, stage manager and/or opera singer)
  • A timeline and production plan tailored to the recipient’s individual needs
  • Professional assessment and guidance regarding casting, production, and rehearsal plans

The Opera Creation Program is generously supported by the Budd Sugarman Foundation.
