Idomeneo, King of Crete, is sailing home following victory in the Trojan war.  He is saved from a terrible death by Neptune, God of the Sea, and in exchange for his life, rashly vows to sacrifice the first person he meets on shore. In a tragic twist of fate, the victim turns out to be his only and much-beloved son, Idamante.

From out of its dignified, classical framework, Idomeneo bursts to life with some of the most heartfelt,  passionate music Mozart ever wrote for the human voice.
