Queen Elizabeth I loves the Earl of Leicester but suspects he has fallen for her rival, Mary, Queen of Scots. Following the example set by Schiller’s play on which the opera is based, Donizetti throws historical accuracy to the wind and orchestrates a searing confrontation between the rival Queens, ending with Elizabeth’s demand for Mary’s execution.

The dark intrigue of the Tudor court is thrillingly brought to life by Gaetano Donizetti’s sumptuous melodies and rousing ensembles, culminating in Mary’s heartbreaking, bravura death scene.
