Otello a former slave, has risen to the rank of general and has found love with his devoted wife, Desdemona. His friend and lieutenant Iago, empowered by a consuming envy, brilliantly plays on Otello's fatal weakness—jealousy—in his quest to destroy him.

Shakespeare's heart-wrenching tragedy is served magnificently by Giuseppe Verdi's score. Clifton Forbis, triumphant as Siegmund in Die Walküre, returns to sing Verdi's most demanding tenor role.
