Nixon in China features an original libretto by Alice Goodman, based on the memoirs of the people involved and news accounts from the time of the visit.
The premiere performances of Nixon in China took place at the Houston Grand Opera from Oct. 22 to Nov. 7, 1987, followed quickly by performances at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (Dec. 4 to 17, 1987), the John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts (March 26 to April 5, 1988) and the Netherlands Opera (June 2 to 18, 1988).
The most critically divisive pieces in Adams's oeuvre are his historical operas. While it is now easy to say that Nixon in China's influential score spawned a new interest in contemporary opera, it has not always been met with such laudatory opinion.
