Take an in-depth look at The Magic Flute with the following articles and essays.

Composing The Magic Flute

In his short, brilliant opera-writing career Mozart mastered opera seria with Idomeneo. He perfected dramma giocosa (a comedy of manners which evolved out of opera buffa to incorporate often-moving depths of emotions) with Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni, and The Marriage of Figaro. For his final opera, he turned to Singspiel, an early sort of musical theatre that included spoken dialogue. He had been enchanted by this artform since he had first heard it and loved the diverting and playful possibilities.
