Tosca, a play by Victorien Sardou (1887).

First Night

Jan. 14, 1900 at Teatro Costanzi in Rome.

Reception

Tosca premiered in 1900 to mixed reviews. It was considered by some to be vulgar; a “shabby little shocker.” Despite its brutality, Tosca has become central opera repertory with the role of Tosca considered to be one of the composer’s most varied and interesting heroines, fit for great operatic actresses.
