Carmen. The name conjures myriad allusions: feral gypsy, sexual hedonist, fatalistic soul. This irresistible seductress enters into a love affair with a man whose consuming jealousy attempts to tame her. Underneath the erotically alluring sun-drenched setting is a chronicle of fatal conflict as duty and obsession collide. The driving passion of Bizet’s score includes some of opera’s most popular music. Paolo Carignani returns to conduct; Joel Ivany of Against the Grain Theatre directs.
