Whirlwave: Virtuoso Concerti Under the direction of Brian Current, the young artists of The Glenn Gould School New Music Ensemble present two concerti that showcase the virtuosity and artistry of two exciting young soloists: Adam Sherkin performs the world premiere of his own new piano concerto, Whirlwave, and Andréa Tyniec is featured in Kaija Saariaho’s only violin concerto, Graal Théâtre. The program also includes Saariaho’s evocative Il pleut for soprano and harp.

Rival Romantics Young pianist, operatic vocal coach and COC Ensemble Studio graduate Christopher Mokrzewski presents works of romantic inspiration by two rival titans of the 19th century: the colossal Sonata in F Minor, Op. 5 by Brahms, and Wagner's Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde, transcribed for piano by Liszt.
Tues. April 10, 2012 12 – 1 p.m. Trio Arkel
Three of Toronto’s finest musicians (Marie Bérard, violin; Teng Li, viola; and Winona Zelenka, cello) unite for a program of beautiful but rarely-performed works, including Kaija Saariaho’s evocative Cloud Trio, composed under the big sky over French Alps and inspired by the rich metaphor of the cloud: its state or shape so recognizable, yet always varied and rich in detail.
In a presentation that sure to amaze and inspire, Yvon Soglo (B-boy Crazy Smooth) brings together some of the best street dancers in Canada to present an interactive show that takes the audience through the evolution of B-boying, from the 70’s through the 80’s and into the 90’s, with dramatic costume and music changes, building up to the dance form as it is practiced today.

Spotlight on Young Artists Some of the brightest rising stars on the Canadian classical music scene will illuminate the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre in an exciting hour of solo and chamber music celebrating their victories at the 2011 Canadian Music Competition.

Histoire d'amour Contemporary dance company BoucharDanse brings innovative choreography together with narrative-driven theatre to examine our undying search for love. Performers Brendan Wyatt, Sylvie Bouchard and Christian Laurin present poignant and comic journeys that depict love throughout history, from Ancient Greece and the Middle Ages, to the Early Modern and Romantic periods.

New York State of Mind Singer Lauren Margison and pianist Christopher Mokrzewski take a noon-hour break from their operatic pursuits (she a big-voiced young soprano with several jazz recordings under her belt; he a répétiteur and vocal coach with genre-crossing moxie) and team up to present a powerhouse program of jazz standards and pop classics, paying homage to the city that inspired Billy Joel, Billie Holiday, and everyone in between … the Big Apple.
