Canadian Art Song Project (CASP)

A Celebration of Canadian Art Song
This concert marks the official launch of the Canadian Art Song Project, an exciting new Toronto-based collective dedicated to the creation and performance of Canadian art song. Co-directed by tenor Lawrence Wiliford and collaborative pianist Steven Philcox, the program will include the world premiere of a new cycle by Brian Harman written for soprano Carla Huhtanen; mezzo-soprano Krisztina Szabó in a performance of the Seven “Dark Lady” Sonnets by David Passmore; and Srul Iving Glick’s Two Landscapes, performed by Lawrence Wiliford. The program also features pianist Christopher Mokrzewski.

Pictures at an Exhibition
Award-winning Russian-Canadian pianist Alexander Seredenko showcases his passion and virtuosity in one of the great masterpieces in the solo piano repertoire: Mussorgsky’s monumental Pictures at an Exhibition. The program also includes Scarlatti’s Sonata K380, Chopin’s Ballade No. 2 in F Major and Larysa Kuzmenko’s eulogy to the 1986 nuclear disaster, In Memoriam for the Victims of Chernobyl.

Tango! Homage to Astor Piazzolla
Heat up the month of March with the sizzling and sensual playing of Ensemble Vivant, “Canada’s chamber music treasure” (Toronto Star). The Ensemble is joined by bassist Dave Young in a spicy selection of tunes from their recent hit CD, Homage to Ástor Piazzolla, including Milonga for Three and Oblivion, as well as the Toronto premiere of Aldemaro Romero's Fuga con Pajarillo.

Ryan MacEvoy McCullough, piano

Bach and Harbison
American pianist Ryan MacEvoy McCullough performs the two piano sonatas of John Harbison, one of the most important composers of our day, and pairs them with selections from Bach’s Partita No. 4, which the composer was studying when he wrote the sonatas. The artist will discuss the influence of Bach on Harbison’s composition and offer some fascinating insights based on his own work with Harbison. As part of the program, Harbison himself will introduce the piano works.
