Tim Albery has Arrived

Rehearsals for Aida are now well underway, and on Monday, director Tim Albery (whom you may remember as the director of Götterdämmerung, War and Peace, and Rodelinda) introduced us all to his vision for the production. The discussion took place in the Imperial Oil Opera Theatre, where we were surrounded by various and sundry props and set pieces. Johannes Debus and the principal singers were all present, and the first music rehearsal took place after the concept discussion concluded.

Audition Announcement: Female Children Needed for Britten's Death in Venice

[This is an audition announcement from production coordinator Shawna Green]

The Canadian Opera Company is looking for two female children to perform in the upcoming production of the opera Death in Venice by Benjamin Britten.

The children will be girls between the ages of six and ten. They will need to have good control of their movements and be focused. Concentration and memory skills will also be needed. Rehearsals will take place after school and on weekends. Some of the rehearsals and performances will go late in the evenings.

An honorarium will be paid at the end of the production.

Costume Sketches from Death in Venice


If you love period costume, click over to Fashion is My Muse to view Richard Hudson's costume sketches for our upcoming Death in Venice. The opera is set at the end of the Edwardian era, and the broad hat brims, high collars, and bouffant sleeves characteristic of women's fashions from the period are in evidence, particularly in the first "Hotel Guest" image. For the men, look for curled mustaches, three-piece suits (which in the period were taking over from the frock coat), and sharply creased pants (the trouser press had only been recently invented).
