• Meet our Salome

    By COC Staff

A COC signature production fusing opera, theatre, dance, and film, R. Strauss’ Salome returns to the Four Seasons Centre Stage starting Friday, February 3! Academy Award-nominated director Atom Egoyan leads this cinematic experience, starring Ensemble Studio alum Ambur Braid in the iconic title role. The Canadian soprano makes her first COC appearance since 2018’s Hadrian, bringing expertise and acclaim as the princess Salome from her “explosive” performance in Barrie Kosky’s production for Oper Frankfurt.

We sat down with Ambur to learn more about the show, her approach to the title role, and what to expect from our experimental approach to R. Strauss’ classic thriller.

This production reunites Ambur with soprano Karita Mattila, renowned for her own powerhouse performances in the title role—here, singing Salome’s mother, Herodias.

Reflecting on the process of singing one of opera’s most iconic heroines, Ambur explores the rehearsal period as a time of connecting to her character.

In discussing the challenges of the role, Ambur considers the weight of the show’s history, the complexity of the role itself, and the expectations that come with it.

While Salome still shocks audiences today, Ambur notes its sustained relevance as a reflection of the show’s ability to unearth honest, relatably human emotions.

Finally, Ambur explains why someone should see Salome, calling it the perfect production for anyone to experience the epic drama of live opera.

Opening Friday, February 3, 2023, Richard Strauss’ Salome runs February 5, 9, 11, 17, 19, and 24. Tickets are now on sale!
