• Introducing... OKAN

    By COC News

Espiral premieres online next Saturday, November 13 at 7:30 p.m. ET, delivering an energetic, world-class concert to our slate of digital offerings this season. Following up on the operatic stylings of In Concert: Russell Braun and Tamara Wilson and the lighthearted comedy of Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, this performance offers a new perspective to the COC stage representative of the breadth of programming featured in the Free Concert Series in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre.

The 2021 JUNO Award winner for World Music Album, Espiral is an eclectic mix of jazz, folk, and global rhythms released by the Toronto-based, women-led ensemble OKAN. Diving headlong into the group’s Afro-Cuban roots, co-leaders Elizabeth Rodriguez and Magdelys Savigne fuse cross-cultural influences into highly-spirited, wholly unique tunes like the album’s title track.

Originally slated to perform as part of our Free Concert Series in April of 2020, the COC community missed the opportunity to experience OKAN as the world came to a screeching halt just weeks prior. After many delays and reschedules, we are thrilled to finally host this group in the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts' Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre. For a taste of the group’s stunning live presence, check out their Live Video for Espiral track “Trocada.”

Looking to experience even more of our city’s multi-cultural mosaic? This week, we premiered The Free Concert Series in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre: City Sessions with our inaugural artist, BLISK, a Toronto-based group synthesizing polyphonic Eastern European song, dance, and movement with hypnotic percussion. Tune in and view the full performance schedule at coc.ca/CitySessions.

Premiering online next Saturday, join us for the unforgettable music stylings of OKAN in Espiral! Sign up today for your Free Digital Membership to enjoy the performance alongside all of our other fall offerings.
