• Preview: Hansel & Gretel

    By COC Staff

For the first time on the Canadian Opera Company mainstage since our 1997/1998 season, Humperdinck's Hansel & Gretel is being re-imagined for the 21st century in a new production by director Joel Ivany.

We have a sneak peek of Humperdinck's glorious score in this excerpt of the "Evening Prayer" performed by COC Ensemble Studio artists Anna-Sophie Neher and Simone McIntosh at our 2019/2020 Season Reveal event this past winter.

In this scene, Hansel (McIntosh) and Gretel (Neher) realize they've lost their way in the woods and sing an evening prayer before laying down to sleep.

It's always exciting when we get to bring a new production to our audiences — and director Joel Ivany (Founder & Artistic Director of Against the Grain Theatre, which has just wrapped up its three-year residency as the COC's Company-in-Residence) has been working hard this summer on creating and designing the technical elements for Hansel & Gretel with set & projection designer S. Katy Tucker at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.

Lucky for us, he gave us a few glimpses of what to expect this winter over Twitter!

Join us this winter for Humperdinck's Hansel & Gretel, on stage from February 6 - 21, 2020 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.
