Manager, Human Resources



The Canadian Opera Company (COC) is currently seeking a full-time Manager, Human Resources. The incumbent is a knowledgeable HR professional who is relied upon by management and staff for HR generalist expertise, best practices, advice and tactical consultative support in all areas of human resources. This position, which reports into the General Director’s office, is suitable for a hands-on, independent, impartial and proficient professional who has experience working in both non-union and union environments.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Researches, recommends and implements company-wide human resources policies and procedures

  • Serves as a trusted advisor and provides guidance and interpretation of company policies and acts as the point of contact on all policy-related matters

  • Manages HR matters as they arise, advising management staff on employment matters, considering rights, responsibilities and best practices

  • Works with the Executive Management team in developing roll-out plans and communications that affect human resource matters

  • Leads and provides coaching on workplace issues such as performance management and employee relations up to and including employment termination

  • Remains current on and develops new processes and practices to ensure compliance with provincial Employment Standards legislation, Ontario Human Rights Legislation, AODA and all other employment regulations

  • Maintains in-depth knowledge of legal requirements related to human resources and works with external legal counsel as required

  • Promptly and respectfully investigates incidents and/or complaints which may include workplace harassment

  • Takes a lead role with respect to Health & Safety, Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) and any Return to Work programs

  • Participates as a key member of the Joint Health and Safety Committee

  • Works with all management levels to apply appropriate techniques and methodologies to recruit, develop and retain engaged staff

  • Manages aspects of internal staffing and external recruitment which includes postings, resume screening, interviews, reference checking, preparation of employment agreements and follow up documentation

  • Delivers and/or arranges training and support as required under various policies and legislation and maintains training records where required

  • Provides HR advice in collective bargaining negotiations and works with unions on HR related matters

  • Works closely with external providers to analyze group benefit options and plans, manages, communicates and administers the program

  • Manages various HR projects and ensures timely completion and appropriate reports and/or communication where required


KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Degree or diploma in business administration, human resources management or a related field

  • Designation (or working towards a designation) from HRPA is preferred

  • Minimum of five years of progressive HR generalist experience

  • Demonstrated ability in all areas of HR including employee/labour relations, recruitment, performance management, coaching/development, group benefits, etc.

  • Strong understanding of provincial employment legislation including Employment Standards Act, Ontario Human Rights Code, Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, AODA to name a few

  • Strong interpersonal, relationship building and verbal and written communication skills to work effectively across all levels of staff

  • Ability to make sound decisions and consider the overall impact and exposure to the company

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

  • Highly ethical, impartial, diplomatic, respectful, organized and accountable

  • Enjoys a breadth of HR responsibilities from hands-on practical tasks to broader policy and project accountabilities

  • Proactive working style with attention to detail

  • Knowledge about diversity and inclusion in the workplace is a requirement

  • Computer literacy, including effective working skills in Microsoft Office programs

  • Previous experience working in the performing arts and an appreciation of opera as a cultural art form is an asset
