Throughout the pandemic, we have been hard at work revitalizing our administrative and rehearsal space into a fresh new venue for expanded programming. As a unique stage for new and experimental works, we believe the Canadian Opera Company Theatre (formerly known as the Imperial Oil Opera Theatre) can help serve as a catalyst for storytelling and artistic expression that reflects and engages the many communities making up the GTA and Canada.

Fantasma
by Ian Cusson and Colleen Murphy 
March 9, 10, 12, and 13

Former COC Composer-in-Residence Ian Cusson returns to thrill audiences with the world premiere of Fantasma, the tale of best friends Léa and Ivy, who together stumble upon a dark secret at an old-fashioned family carnival. Sung in English and set in contemporary times, this production is highly recommended for young adults, and offers a great introduction to opera as a living, breathing contemporary form of cultural expression. 

The Queen in Me

June 2, 3, and 4

Another world premiere hits the COCT stage in June with interdisciplinary creator-performer Teiya Kasahara’s The Queen in Me. Exploring the constraints of conventional opera and their reliance on gender and sex stereotypes, this production shatters traditional expectations of demure muses and femme fatales by turning opera entirely on its head. We recommend this work for audiences both new and familiar to opera, as Kasahara tackles the canon with vital new perspectives.
