David C. Ferguson to continue as Canadian Opera Company General Director through 2025/2026

December 3, 2024

The Canadian Opera Company has extended the contract of COC General Director David C. Ferguson to June 30, 2026. The decision was ratified this week at a meeting of the company’s Board of Directors.

Ferguson joined the COC in June 2024, selected by the company’s Board for bringing operational stability and economic guidance to the organization as it sought a new leader. As a long-time member of the COC community, including previous service as COC Board Chair, Ferguson brings to the table a deep understanding of the organization’s values, goals, and challenges, paired with valuable business acumen accrued over a decades-long career in accounting and finance.

“We are delighted to confirm David’s term as General Director through the completion of the 2025/2026 season,” says Marcia Lewis Brown, Chair of the COC Board of Directors and Chair of the COC Board’s Search Committee. “Over the last months, the company has benefitted greatly from his steady leadership and genuine desire to support the organization, across all levels, in doing what we do best: creating and sharing incredible opera.”

“Furthermore, the extension of David’s contract has secured for our Search Committee the vital time required for completing a rigorous recruitment process,” continues Brown. “It is our goal that the company’s next General Director will have been identified, with ample transition time, for an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.”

Of the news, Ferguson says that he looks forward to leading the Canadian Opera Company at a time of great artistic and audience development momentum. “It was a great privilege to take on this role this past summer and I’m grateful for the warm welcome, continued insights, and words of appreciation from this hard-working and talented team,” he says. “I care deeply for this company and am honoured to be able to lend my unique background and experience to creating a firm foundation for the COC’s boundary-pushing artistic work and meaningful community-rooted efforts.”
