Instrumental Series

In celebration of the COC's production of Bluebeard’s Castle/Erwartung, pianist-composer Adam Sherkin returns to the Free Concert Series in a program highlighting the keyboard music of Béla Bartók from the exact timespan he wrote Bluebeard’s Castle: ca. 1911.

In juxtaposition—and homage—to this music, Sherkin premieres his own Allegro gentile (a companion piece to Bartok's Allegro barbaro) and a newly commissioned monodrama for acting pianist, with a libretto by celebrated Canadian writer, David James Brock.

Brock pens a condensed modern psycho-drama, with fresh perspectives on Duke Bluebeard and his wife Judith, thrusting these characters into the 21st century.
