PRIMORDIAL is an exploration of darkness.

Through the vehicle of solo cello and some spoken word elements, this program charts a course through the half-lit world of Ana Sokolović, the veiled night-sounds of György Kurtág and Kaija Saariaho, the imaginary folk music of Pascal Dusapin, and a call to the beyond by Peter Eötvös. Structured by fragments of John Cage's 4'33", the music culminates in Paul Desenne's Jaguar Songs, an electrifying work that transforms the cello into a shamanic voice, bringing to life the unknowable mystery of the forest and the vital energy that powers the night.
