Werther

Werther

Jules Massenet

May 7 - 23, 2026 Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts

A tragedy about impossible love and dangerous obsession makes its first COC appearance in 30 years in a new production from Alain Gauthier.

This rare operatic gem from one of French opera’s great composers tells the story of a young man’s romantic infatuation and the spiral of despair that consumes him when that love is denied. Massenet’s sumptuous score delves into the tortured passions of a young mind while shining a light on the social conventions he rejects, as well as those whose lives are forever altered by his desperate final act.

Synopsis in a Minute

The young poet Werther falls in love with Charlotte, the eldest daughter of a widowed bailiff. Although attracted to Werther, Charlotte is bound by a promise made to her dying mother that she would marry Albert, and her sense of duty to her family prevents her from breaking off the engagement. Overwhelmed by the prospect of life without her, Werther makes a shocking and fateful decision.

Composed By Jules Massenet

Jules Massenet

Born in Mountaud on May 12, 1842;
died in Paris on August 13, 1912

Jules Massenet was a French composer of the Romantic era best known for his operas, which include Manon (1884) and Werther (1892). Massenet also composed oratorios, ballets, orchestral works, incidental music, piano pieces, and songs.

A graduate of the Conservatoire de Paris and winner of the country's top musical prize, the Prix de Rome (1863), he soon earned a reputation for his operas. Massenet produced more than forty stage works, from opéra-comique to lyric dramas, oratorios, cantatas, and ballets, and was widely recognised as the leading composer of opera in France of the Belle Époque.

By the time of his death in 1912, Massenet had come to be regarded by many as somewhat old-fashioned, despite his best-known operas remaining popular in France and abroad. Later in the 20th century, however, his other works underwent a rediscovery, with many going on to enjoy fresh stagings and recordings.
