Shy Nemorino will do anything to win the heart of the clever Adina—even buy a so-called “elixir of love” from the travelling quack Dr. Dulcamara. The potion (really, cheap wine) sparks a whirlwind of comic misunderstandings before true love finally triumphs.

A hit at its premiere and beloved ever since, The Elixir of Love delights with its warmth, wit, and irresistible melody. Donizetti’s music perfectly captures this “male Cinderella” tale, from the bubbling ensembles to the tender beauty of Nemorino’s “Una furtiva lagrima,” one of opera’s most famous arias.

Composed By Gaetano Donizetti

Gaetano Donizetti

Gaetano Donizetti emerged as one of the leading figures of Italian opera during the early 19th century, at a time when the bel canto style flourished across Europe. Working at a remarkable pace, Donizetti composed operas for major theatres in Italy, Paris, and Vienna, earning widespread acclaim for his melodic invention and dramatic instinct. Despite his professional success, his later years were marked by serious illness and personal hardship, and his health deteriorated rapidly, cutting his career tragically short.

Regardless of these challenges, Donizetti left behind an extraordinary operatic legacy. He composed over 70 operas, with Lucia di Lammermoor, The Elixir of Love, Don Pasquale, La fille du régiment, and Anna Bolena among his most enduring works. A master of both comedy and tragedy, Donizetti played a pivotal role in the development of Italian opera, bridging the worlds of Rossini and Verdi and shaping the future of the art form.
